Have you ever wished your floor was so clean you could eat off it? While you may not be planning to serve any food on your floor, it’s still nice when people describe your home this way. The good news is that getting your floor this clean really isn’t that hard. Use these tips to revamp your New York City apartment and make your floors clean enough that you won’t feel guilty for following the five-second rule.
A Little Dish Detergent
It may surprise you to learn that a little dish detergent goes a really long way. Mix a bucket of warm water along with a squirt of Dawn dish detergent. Mop your vinyl or tile floor with the solution to remove greasy buildup and restore a healthy shine. If you have serious stains, then use a deck brush with stiff bristles to scrub the solution into the floor. Dry the floor with a few rags to remove all traces of cleanser and leave it sparkling.
Hot Water and Tea Bags
If you have wood floors, then you can shine them with a little tea. Mix boiling water with two plain teabags. After the tea bags have steeped in the water, pour the mixture into a bucket of cool water. Dip your clean mop in the solution and then wring out as much water as possible. Run this over your hardwood floors to restore their beautiful shine and moisturize the wood.
The Power of Steam
If you have wood, vinyl and ceramic tile floors in the home, then consider harnessing the power of steam. Steam mops can be used on most hard flooring surfaces. The heat loosens dirt and the attached mop head cleans it away. The same tool can be used to clean floors throughout your apartment, and that makes the chore both faster and easier.
Vacuum the Right Way
You understand how important it is to vacuum regularly, but did you know the most effective way to vacuum? Vacuums work best when they are being pulled backwards. Work in one direction, and move the vacuum slowly as you walk backwards across the carpet. Once you have vacuumed the room in one direction, turn the vacuum 90 degrees and vacuum across the carpet moving in that direction. Continue working around the room so that you have vacuumed the carpet from all directions. It takes a little longer to vacuum in this manner, but you will remove more dirt from the carpet. If you don’t have time to go in all four directions, then work in at least two to capture more dirt and clean the carpet.
