Coffee and red wine stains can be particularly troublesome when they are on your carpet. They stand out and will always draw attention. Cleaning them can be next to impossible, but there is hope for your carpet or area rug.
Early Steps
Whether your carpet is a thick plush or a tight Berber, the first step is to blot up the liquid. Never rub at the mark, as this will force the stain deep into the fibers and make it harder to remove. Paper towels are more absorbent than cloth towels, so they will naturally wick up most of the liquid. Continue blotting with the paper towels until you are no longer able to pull out the coffee or wine. If you have a wet-dry vacuum or a steam cleaner, the suction action on these machines can also be used to remove the liquid without rubbing.
Dish Detergent
A gentle dish detergent like Dawn can be used to start removing the stain. Test the carpet for color-fastness in an inconspicuous spot before using the dish detergent on the stain. A single teaspoon mixed with a quart of warm water will be more than enough detergent. Spray it on the stain or use your fingers to dribble it over the soiled area. Using clean white paper towels or rags, continue blotting the liquid to remove the stain. Continue until the stain is removed or the dish detergent solution is used.
Vinegar
Repeat the process using a mixture of two parts vinegar and one part water. Dampen the stain with the mixture and blot it up using clean white paper towels or rags. Do not rub at the stain, and do not over-saturate the area. If the stain is still present, repeat the steps with dish detergent and vinegar. Once the stain is no longer visible, clean the entire area with fresh water.
